This, that and the other thing Monday
June 2, 2008

As some of you noticed, I was MIA a few days last week.  I was at the hospital, supporting my sister while my brother-in-law went through the devasting final days of pancreatic cancer.  He died Saturday morning.  My heartfelt thanks to all who sent messages and called with words of encouragement.

The Power of LoveAnd, in the way that the world keeps moving on, depending on the arrangements still to be made, I should be attending Lori Foster's Readers and Writers Get-Together this weekend in Cincinnati.   There will be over 100 authors there to make it a memorable experience for all the readers and writers.

From author Lori Foster:  This year we’ll be donating to the Conductive Learning Center of Greater Cincinnati, a local school specializing in education for children with spina bifida and cerebral palsy.

I also organized an anthology with contributions from myself and 11 other authors, titled The Power of Love, that will be published through Berkley in June, and proceeds from the sales of that book will go to the Battered Women’s Shelter.  And we’ll be continuing our fundraiser for the troops, including proceeds from a cookbook that I put together with donated recipes from authors, radio personalities, and a few readers, published through Samhain.

Of course, our event always includes one very special raffle for The Animal Adoption Foundation.  We try to help as many causes as we can, and my volunteers are incredible, not to mention the readers and authors who show up and help!   (I'm looking forward to offering my support and I'll be blogging all weekend from the big party!)
                                    Touch of Evil
From author Cathy ClampTor Publishing is starting to dip their toe into the ebook market and Touch of Evil (the first of the Thrall trilogy) was selected as one of the free offerings to launch the venture. If readers visit the Tor site  and sign up for the newsletter, they’ll get an email with a free download of the book in PDF, HTML or Mobi!  We think it’s a great promo since the final book of the trilogy, Touch of Darkness will hit the shelf in August.  (Nothing says love better to a reader than a free book)

From author Mark David GersonThe MoonQuest was named a gold-medal winner for visionary fiction in the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY), said medal to awarded (in abstentia, alas) in L.A. next week in conjunction with Book Expo America.

Jenny and Kelly walking for Breast Cancer

Pink Ladies Jenny and Kelly

And special kudos to my nieces who walked in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer  this weekend in Chicago and managed to raise over $10,000 through fundraisers and donations.  From Kelly's blog:  For 2 days we walked a total of 39.3 miles in Chicago, Il. We walked, slept in tents, showered in a truck, and walked some more.

We walked for all of the people we know who have found a lump in their breast, for those who have gone through treatments, and for those still fighting. But most of all, we walked in memory of our Grandma Basterash who died from Breast Cancer at the age of 68. We miss her and dedicate our walk to her. (High fives to all who participated, donated and volunteered for this worthwhile event)

Remember, if you have any special news, kudos, info or just interesting stuff to share, please email me and I'll try to get it in the Monday, This, that and the other thing blog.

Bottom Line:  Today is Leave the Office Early Day (according to the celebration calendar), so I say...Go For It!!

I am so very sorry for your loss. You and your sister are blessed to have each other as a support at this difficult time. It seems odd to change topics, but I will also be at the Lori Foster Weekend. I believe that it is a brilliant idea to bring so many authors and readers together to chat and be entertained and also raise funds for several different charity organizations. I am looking forward to my time there.

And I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to donate a short story to the June 2009 charity anthology, TAILS OF LOVE, which has an animal theme and will raise money for a Cincinnati no-kill animal shelter. -- Marcia ;-)
