WisRWA: Friday Food Frenzy/Lori Foster Event

June 6, 2009
December Gebhart, Liz Lincoln, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Trish Milburn at the Dessert Party

The first day of any conference is always hard to get anything done because you usually can take one or two steps before you see someone else that you know and of course, you have to stop and talk to them.  Then a few more join in and before you know it, a couple of hours have past.

Such was the case at the WisRWA conference in Green Bay, WI (home of the Packers).  Unfortunately I missed the program on When Bad Covers Happen to Good Books by Raelene Gorlinsky, Publisher, Ellora's Cave.  A favorite part of the audience was how to turn cover errors into promotional opportunities Castles in the Air by Christina Dodd who's covered featured a 3 armed lady.  That got people's attention.

I went to dinner with my mom and keynote speaker Sherrilyn Kenyon.  Afterwards, there was a dessert reception and gift baskets were raffled off for charity.  Some of the baskets were so creative with one being a lawn chair filled with summer goodies including lots of books.  Another was a cooler, again filled with goodies and books.  I didn't win anything, but there's more to be given away tomorrow.

There also was the usual chocolate fountain with all the dippables like graham crackers, marshmallows, fruit and pretzels.  Rice Krispy bars, little fruity tarts, brownies and cream filled pastries.  A dieter's nightmare.

I called it an early night at midnight, but there were still pockets of authors chatting up a storm and filling each other in on what's been going on since the last conference.  Tomorrow starts early with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

Bottom Line:  Need to buy more raffle tickets (to support literacy, of course).

That wasn't really the bottom line... I'm jumping in here.

Hi, joysann here. I'm near Cincinatti at Lori Foster's Reader & Author Get-Together, and Barbara is correct; one can't move more than a few feet without running into someone else you just have to visit. Seeing people I had the pleasure of meeting last year makes me feel like we're now old friends.

Contrary to popular belief, I did not come here just to win any of these fabulous basket donations (last year I won 4). It just so happens that Lorelei James' erotic westerns are on my growing shopping list, so winning her basket with 4 books and a buffalo patty was exactly right. Since I so enjoy her books written as Lori G. Armstrong, I've been wanting to see how she writes in her other persona.

Brian Wipprecht (Frankly, I think we might have discovered the next Mr Romance)

While the staff here at the Cincinatti Marriott North is exceptionally friendly and helpful, Food Manager Brian Wipprecht caught our attention, expressing his appreciation of the fun crowd that filled the bar after official festivities ended.

There are more book lovers awaiting my discovery downstairs, so I'll have more to share later.

Very Bottom Line: I've just been notified that I've won a 2nd prize. More books!!!

Hm...I want to be where both of you are! ;) Thanks for letting the rest of us live the conferences vicariously.

Congratulations on your first two winnings, Joysann. I wonder if you can top last year's record.

Don't believe her when Joysann says she doesn't come for the prizes. She also won a door prize! Just sitting next to her must be lucky because many at our table also won! Great conference! Friendly people especially Dianna Love and Sarah Parr (and many others--too many to list here!)
Bottom line: Sit by Joysann during raffles.

Barbara, it was so great to have you and your mother with us this weekend. I sure hope she won something at the casino. :) Glad you had fun and hope to see you again in Milwaukee at next year's conference.

Ha! Joysann has some secret karma for winning prizes. We had the roudy bunch in Ohio this weekend. And Brian...well, the eye candy was definitely top shelf.
