Trial by Fire by Jo Davis
It's Your Turn Friday, so I'll tell you what I've read this week and then you can let everyone know what's held your interest lately.  Don't forget, tomorrow I'll be posting another edition of the WW Ladies Book Blurbs.  Meanwhile, here's what I've been reading this week.

Trial by Fire by Jo Davis.   Lieutenent Howard Paxton is a firefighter at Station Five.  Kat McKenna is a teacher who stumbles onto a fire in progress.  The sparks fly when they meet, but the vengeful arsonist who's watching has other plans for them.

I recently got a email asking if I've read any good fireman books and the next day this book arrived.  It wasn't the hot firefighter fluff I was expecting.  The arsonist is distrubing, the fires horrific and Howard and Kat both have a lot of baggage that makes their relationship rocky at times, but all together it makes for a five-alarm read.  This very riviting, sensual story is the first in a series about the firefighters at Station Five.

Duchess by Night by Eloisa James
Duchess at Night by Eloisa James.   Harriet, Duchess of Berrow is a young widow who longs for adventure.  When her friend, Isidore, Duchess of Cosway, decides to make her absent husband jealous so he comes home by visiting a notorious country home, Harriet thinks it time she has some fun.  Lord Strange is known for his unusual houseguests, but when "Harry" Cope arrives, Strange finds he's oddly drawn to the young "man."

I managed to finish this delightful tale in a day (ok, I did nothing else), but I felt so good doing it.  To be able to wear the simple clothing of males after the layers and layers that women of the ton had to endure, was pure heaven to Harriet (and I just remember the pain of nylons and garters and girdles).  The houseguests were of theater and science and wealth, so lots of entertaining conversations.  I want to live in the worlds Eloisa creates with her characters.  Just can't seem to get enough of this witty, delectable, delicious Duchess series.

Blood Noir by Laurell K. Hamilton
Blood Noir
by Laurell K. Hamilton.  Anita Blake, Federal Marshal/ vampire executioner/ necromancer decides to help out friend/werewolf/stripper Jason.   Jason's father is dying and Anita agrees to act as his girlfriend so his dad will finally accept him for who he is.  Meanwhile, the hotel they are staying at is mobbed by media trying to get the story on a president hopeful's son, who just happens to be a dead ringer/former classmate of Jason's.  The resulting scandal could threaten Master of  the City (and Antia's main squeeze) Jean-Claude's power.

I've been a LKH fan from the first Anita Blake book when I read it described as "an R-rated Buffy."  And I have even reread the first seven a couple of times.  Blood Noir is the 16th book in this series and it definitely has gotten bloodier and sexier as the series has progressed.  I've stuck with it even though some of the books appeared to be heavier on erotica than on the mysteries I was used to. While I long for the adventures of the earlier books,  Blood Noir's mystery story line has given me hope that LKH is heading back to her roots with a full course of Anita's necromancer/Federal Marshal job and leave the sex as dessert.

Ok, now you can post what you've been reading lately.

Bottom Line:   Today is National Taffy Day.  I'm off to the Post Office to see if anyone sent me any...and then I'll make my dentist appointment.

I'll be patiently waiting my turn at the library for Blood Noir. Like you, I held out hope that LKH was going to through a phase. Harlequin gave me hope and it seems to continue with Blood Noir.

Barbara, Thank you SO much for the awesome feature!! You made my entire week! Zack's story is next, out in May 2009, and I have to say he's my favorite Station Five guy. Ok, I just finished "Slave" by Cheryl Brooks and LOVED, LOVED it!! I immediately found her website and discovered to my delight that the next in the series is due out in October. What's not to love about action and yummy heroes with feline characteristics? Try this series, folks.

Hey Barbara! We met at National this past summer over breakfast. I'm so glad you featured Jo Davis' firefighter series today. I got to read an advanced reader copy of UNDER FIRE, too. It is such a fabulous read and by a very talented writer. Those guys of hers at Station Five will keep people clammoring back for more. By the way Barbara, will you be at the RWA National convention in San Francisco this summer?

Hi, Barbara. I can't wait for Jo's book. I love a good firefighter book; in fact, my first book in September has firefighters all over the place. :) And, seriously, who could resist that cover on Jo's book? (Trish takes moment to wipe drool from her mouth.)

I don't usually read firefighter stories, but Jo Davis' book sounds deeper than the usual fare so I'm adding it to my list. I like complex villians and this one promises to deliver. Uh, and ditto on the cover, Trish!

I just finished "Garden Spells" by Sarah Addison Allen. It's out in paperback now and a friend told me I had to read it. She was right. I found the writing to be lyrical! It has the flavor of Alice Hoffman's "Practical Magic" with a Southern twist. Her characters are unique without being caricatures. I really enjoyed the idea of rebelling against your family history or learning to just go with the flow. Great read. :)

That Eloisa Jamess' book sounds like a good weekend pick! Thanks for mentioning it. I am currently reading An Unreasonable Woman: a True Story of Shrimpers, Politicos, Polluters and the Fight for Seadrift, Texas. It's pretty engrossing and it has made me run more than once to EPA webistes to see how my county is rated on the EPA toxic waste ratings sites. I just can't believe that the area of Texas she wrote about has been touted for years as an ideal vacation spot for Spring Breakers who don't want to travel all that far.

Just finished The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig. So much fun and so many different genres in one book. It's historical romance, action adventure and chicklit all in one--and it totally works! : )

I'm reading Trial by Fire for a quote. Though it just arrived last Saturday, while I was finishing up my High Risk #3, I guess I'd better hurry since I just noticed that -- yikes! -- it's an August book. (Hmm. Wondering if they accidently sent me the wrong book.) Lucky you, I didn't get a hottie cover; just a typical ARC cardboard cover. So far I'm really enjoying it. Very hot (in many ways) with great characters. JoAnn :)

I finished Debbie Macomber's Twenty Wishes this week, and found it much better than the last two in the Blossom Street series. It's a tearjerker, but happy tears. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm now reading John Feinstein's book, Living on the Black, about two baseball pitchers, Tom Glavine and Mike Mussina. I love John Feinstein's sports writing, and even read his two books on golf, and I'm not a big golf fan. Lesa Holstine, www.lesasbookcritiques.blogspot.com

I have heard lots about Jo Davis's firefighter book. I am really looking forward to reading it! Barabara, I'm glad to hear it's a bit darker, since that is how I like my arson stories. *g*

I forgot to mention what I've been reading. I read Claudia Dain's "The Courtesan's Secret", which was FABULOUS. I am just starting Deb Marlowe's "An Improper Aristocrat", which features an Egyptologist/scholar hero. What a treat!

I have to stop reading Your Turn Fridays. My lists grow and grow...
I'm listening to Clive Cussler's Skeleton Coast. Those uber-macho techno stories are sometimes entertaining, and can even be a little educational. With a grain of salt. Or an ocean full.

I forgot to mention what I was reading too. I just finished Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr (interesting world she's built; not surprised it's a RITA finalist) and am now reading Remembered by Tamera Alexander.

I just finished Cleo Coyne's latest Coffeehouse Mystery "French Pressed." These are fun cozy mysteries and I always enjoy the Greenwich Village setting and all the coffee and food scenes. This time the romance between heroine Claire and hunky detective boyfriend Mike has advanced too. Can't wait for the next in the series. I'm also going to spend Memorial Day sunning myself on the chaise with Neil S. Plakcy's surfer mysteries, which are set in Hawaii.

I just read The Beast of Noor by Janet Lee Carey. It's a children's title but quite good if you like old Irish mysticism. I'm also near the end of The Cure for Modern Life by Lisa Tucker about Matthew, who works for a large pharmacy company and Amelia, the ethicist and their relationship, as well as their machinations. It's a good weekend read.
