Were we right or. . .. .?
June 24, 2008

Well, sometimes great minds DO think alike. In PW, last February -- you heard it here first! -- we called David Wroblewski's The Story of Edgar Sawtelle "
a literary thriller with commercial legs,. . .bound to be a bestseller." A few months later, it seems everyone agrees. The New York Times' Janet Maslin calls the 550+ tome the "most enchanting debut novel of the summer." The Chicago Tribune calls it a "meaty, masterly debut novel. . ., easily the best work of fiction ever written about dogs." (But unlike some other recent books that have garnered a lot of attention, the dog in this one doesn't speak -- but then neither does his master, who was born mute.) What is it about this first novel from an unknown writer (who used to develop software) that has so excited so many people? I'm going to crack it tonight to try to find out, but I welcome your thoughts in advance. I'm listening. . .. . .
