Books & Son
August 4, 2008

As the editor of this magazine, I get a lot of books sent to me free. (And I'm not complaining, so, please, don't even think about changing your ways.) In fact, free books, sent unbidden, is one of the many great perks of this job—I get books I want and books I never knew I wanted until I had them in my possession. Still, I make a point of visiting bookstores wherever I travel, for business or pleasure, and I spend plenty on books for my own use. (That even I, in my privileged position, still buy more books in a year than the average American, who buys two to six, depending on the study, is a depressing point, but one to be discussed elsewhere later.)  More

I get a lot of free books from BEA and publishing houses as well. I pay back this "good karma" by recommending my discoveries of new books and new authors to anyone who might be interested. I think we publishing people generate so many sales from our recommendations, it more than makes up for the free reading we receive.

From time to time I still get review books from various publishers (this is from my days as a book club facilitator). Some I like and some I'm not crazy about. I usually pass them around to my book-reader friends. But I still love to buy books from Amazon and various book stores. There's nothing like going into a book store to browse and coming out with a new discovery to read. I love it!

I think part of the reason I'm a librarian is that I have a compulsion about books. No matter how many I'm surrounded with every day, it's not enough. I have to OWN the ones I love, even though I can go out to the shelves and find almost anything I need. So, I browse on Amazon and I go to bookstores whenever I can. I like to see how booksellers are displaying and promoting their books. It gives me good ideas for the library and I'm not above stealing those ideas when I can!
