B&N Sees Tough Year Ahead

Faced with what it called an uncertain economic environment and difficult comparisons to 2007 when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Secret set sales record, Barnes & Noble said yesterday it expects same store sales to be "slightly positive" for the year. In 2007, comp sales rose 1.8% for the year. B&N said it is expecting a "challenging retail year," and noted that its post-holiday sales trend, when business trailed off, continued into the first quarter of 2008. Same store sales in last year's final quarter fell 0.5%. Read on »

Rinaldi Leaving Bloomsbury for Rodale

Bloomsbury USA, which cut seven jobs last month, will lose its publisher and president later this month when Karen Rinaldi steps down to join Rodale where she will be senior v-p, general manager and publishing director of Rodale Books. Rinaldi is leaving Bloomsbury March 14 and will start at Rodale April 1. Read on »


Kensington Adds Another African American Unit

Continuing to aggressively expand its African American publishing program, Kensington Publishing will launch a new imprint focused on inspirational books that will be called Souls of My Sisters, a program based on a bestselling title of the same name by Dawn Marie Daniels and Candace Sandy. Originally published by Kensington's African American-oriented Dafina imprint in 2000, Souls of My Sisters: Black Women Break Their Silence, Tell Their Stories and Heal Their Spirits, is now in its 15th printing and has sold more than 200,000 copies. Dylan Thomas Prize Promise $120,000 to Writer Under 30

Organizers of the EDS Dylan Thomas Prize are actively seeking submissions from North American writers for the £60,000 ($119,000) pound prize. Entries are being accepted until April 30. "We haven't gotten as many entries from America as we'd like," said prize board member Kurt Heinzelman, head of creative writing at the University of Texas, "We'd like to see many more, especially from poets."
