Roaring Brook Adds David Macaulay Imprint

Roaring Brook Press has signed a deal with author David Macaulay establishing a new imprint, David Macaulay Studio, which will launch in 2011. The news comes three months after the retirement of Walter Lorraine, Macaulay’s longtime editor at Houghton Mifflin. The imprint will publish future books by Macaulay, who will serve as creative director, as well as titles by other authors and illustrators.

Two books by Macaulay were signed up as part of the arrangement: Home Sweet Home, about the Earth’s climate and ecosystems, and a second book centering on American history. Decisions as to the specifics of Macaulay’s role as creative director or to the size of the imprint’s staff (Roaring Brook plans to use existing staff initially) have not yet been made. Read on »

PEN Kicks Off World Voices Festival on The Queen Mary 2

PEN American Center bussed approximately 200 publishing industry professionals from Manhattan to Red Hook, Brooklyn, yesterday, to board the ocean liner Queen Mary 2 for a celebration of the PEN World Voices Festival. Festival chair Salman Rushdie, PEN American Center president Francine Prose, and festival sponsor Cunard hosted the on-board luncheon, and gave a sampling of the more than 100 international and American writers who will participate in the 2008 PEN World Voices Festival in New York from April 29 to May 4. University of Toronto Press Adds Broadview Lines

University of Toronto Press (UTP) has entered into an agreement with the publicly-traded Broadview Press to acquire all of Broadview's social sciences and history lists inventory and contractual rights. The acquisition, due to close on or about May 1, 2008, includes approximately 335 titles (260 books in print and an additional 75 works in progress) and expands UTP publishing of upper level university course books and extends their penetration of the post-secondary marketplace. Michael Harrison, president and CEO of Broadview, along with cetain members of Broadview's editorial and sales staff will be joining UTP at the conclusion of the transaction.

Monday's Reviews Today: Hemon's Lazarus and Burroughs' Wolf
Aleksander Hemon, a MacArthur genius, "intelligently unpacks 100 years’ worth of immigrant disillusion, displacement and desperation" into his new novel, The Lazarus Project. In "workmanlike prose" that "underscores his piercing wit," Hemon chronicles a complex murder pinned on a European jew in turn of the century Chicago that, over a century later, draws the interest of a Bosnian-America writer. And in Augusten Burroughs' "powerful" new memoir, A Wolf at the Table, the author winningly details his strained relationship with his unloving, alcoholic father. Read on »
