The Secret's Out, Results Drop at S&S

While Simon & Schuster was able to make up some of the $53 million in The Secret products it shipped last year, it was not enough to prevent sales in the first quarter from falling 12% and profits 32%. Results Off At McGraw-Hill Ed, Steps Up Tech Investment

Revenue at McGraw-Hill Education slipped 0.5%, to $330.2 million, in the first quarter, although the operating loss was reduced by a similar percentage, to $90.3 million. Sales in the school education group fell 4.8%, to $138.8 million, while sales in the higher education/professional/international segment rose 2.9%, to $191.4 million. Read on »


Vanguard Nabs New Bloomberg Book

Philanthropist, billionaire business magnate and current New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed with Perseus' Vanguard Press to do a book on management principles. Vanguard acquired world rights to Do The Hard Things First (And Other Bloomberg Rules for Business and Politics) from agent Arthur Klebanoff; the book is slated for a September 2008 release. Publishers Fight Oregon Censorship Statute

The Association of American Publishers is fighting censorship in Oregon. Yesterday it joined with six Oregon booksellers and the ACLU of Oregon to challenge a new Oregon law that criminalizes the dissemination of sexually explicit material to anyone under age 13, or the dissemination to anyone under age 18 of any material with the intent to sexually arouse the recipient or the provider. The new statute, which makes no provision for judging the material as a whole, nor for considering its serious literary, artistic or scientific value, went into effect January 1. Read on »
