BEHIND THE NEWS
Macomber Signs with Howard for Nonfiction
by Matthew Thornton
Romance writer Debbie Macomber, who has over 100 million copies of her novels in print, has just inked a deal with Touchstone Fireside's Howard Books for two nonfiction inspirational titles. Howard senior editor Cindy Lambert won world rights in an auction conducted by Wendy Lawton at Books & Such. The first of the two, Fishes and Loaves: Living in a Spirit of Generosity, will expound on Macomber's belief that a willingness to live in a spirit of giving will yield unforeseen miracles; in the book, she'll share stories from her own life and from others who commit intentional acts of generosity.

Dekker Signs Two-Book Deal with Hachette
by Rachel Deahl
Bestselling Christian author Ted Dekker has signed to do two novels geared to the general market for Hachette's Center Street imprint. Dekker, who's penned thrillers, fantasies and mysteries (as well as some YA books), is published by Thomas Nelson, but has been on the radar of the trade houses for some time, especially after his novel Skin hit the New York Times bestseller list in 2007. Dekker's first book from Hachette—both will be thrillers—is slated for an April 2009 release.

Thomas Nelson has also been doing its part to find a bigger audience for Dekker. In January the publisher inked a deal with comics writer J.S. Earls to do graphic novel adaptations of a number of Dekker's novels. Dekker, who's written 22 novels, has sold more than three million copies, according to Hachette. There are also two film adaptations of his books in the works--House will be distributed by Roadside Attractions (Super-Size Me) in October and Adam is in development at Lionsgate. (An adaptation of Dekker's novel Thr3e was released in 2006.)

Nelson's New Sales Combination

As reported in PW Daily (June 9), Thomas Nelson is combining its two Christian sales divisions into one group that will be directed by Gary Davidson, senior v-p. The consolidation will merge the Christian retail sales team, which sells to the Christian store market, and the Nelson ministry and direct-sales team, which sells direct to churches and ministries. A spokesperson said no jobs are being lost in the merger, which is being done to better help retailers work with churches and ministries.

SHORT TAKES
David C. Cook's New FLDS Book; Pope Benedict XVI's Strong Sales Results in Backlist Reprints
by Daisy Maryles
This October, David C. Cook is publishing Illegitimate: How a Loving God Rescued a Son of Polygamy, an insider's look into the theology behind the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by Brian Mackert. This is the first FLDS account written from a man's perspective—Mackert was born into a family of one father, four wives and 31 children. In a press release, Cook's trade book publisher, Don Pape, says the author's story "is both relevant and heartwrenching." The book also recounts Mackert's path to becoming a Baptist minister. He regularly speaks to church groups about the realities of radical Mormonism. Cook's promotion includes a national satellite TV tour and a radio tour.

A June 7 story in London's StarArticle World News and Entertainment News reported that Pope Benedict XVI's last book, Jesus of Nazareth, sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide in just over one year. Strong sales of his first major publication written as pope convinced Helder, the largest Catholic publisher in Europe, to reprint a series of Benedict's earlier scholarship. Before becoming the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Benedict had penned 132 books, monographs and commentaries. The British edition of Jesus of Nazareth is published by Bloomsbury, publisher of Harry Potter.

Kathleen Norris Recovers Ancient Christian Concept of Acedia
by Jana Riess

It's been more than 20 years since Kathleen Norris first discovered the term "acedia" in a monastery library. For her, reading a fourth-century monk's writing about acedia (supreme indifference or, literally, "not caring") diagnosed exactly what she had long experienced—a depression that wasn't quite depression, a slothfulness that was not at all laziness, a world weariness that sucked the life out of her and her work. "He was describing something that I'd never heard of, but that I knew," Norris told RBL from her home in Honolulu. "I'm looking at the words of this guy who died in 399, and I'm thinking, 'How did he know?' "

Contemporary readers may well have the same reaction when they read Norris's new book, Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life, due out from Riverhead on September 16. The memoir, which got a starred review in PW on June 9, describes Norris's personal wrestlings with acedia, and how her three-decade marriage and her spiritual practices have functioned as a tether to life and art. (Praying the Psalms, she says, is a "weapon against acedia," since the discipline teaches that repetition leads not to apparent meaninglessness, but to renewal and epiphany.)

The Book of Calamities: Five Questions About Suffering and its Meaning
Peter Trachtenberg. Little, Brown, $23.99 (464p) ISBN 978-0-316-15879-4
Trachtenberg (Seven Tattoos) wryly observes: "Everybody suffers, but Americans have the peculiar delusion that they're exempt from suffering." He shared in this denial until a friend died of cancer, and then he began to ask questions. "Most of these are unanswerable," he admits: Why me? How do I endure? What is just? What does my suffering say about me? about God? And what do I owe those who suffer? This book is "a layman's response" to unimaginable anguish, a collection of powerful stories rather than a philosophical treatise. Writing movingly about victims and survivors of natural disasters, war, genocide, domestic violence, addiction, illness, suicide and injustice, he deftly intermingles their stories with observations from religion, philosophy and literature. Not everyone will want to face this much misery, and Trachtenberg offers no easy solutions. His book, however, like Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression, succeeds because it asks the right questions, calls on the experience of articulate witnesses, and—through skillful narrative and trenchant observation—beguiles the reader into facing heartbreaking reality. Two Original RBL Reviews
Ireland's Saint: The Essential Biography of St. Patrick
J.B. Bury, edited by Jon M. Sweeney. Paraclete, $21.95 (208p) ISBN 978-1-55725-557-0
Editor-writer Sweeney gives Bury's 1905 biography of the legendary St. Patrick a greater contemporary context in this meticulously researched and presented work. An Irish historian, expert on the Greek and Roman empires and a Protestant, Bury wrote what Sweeney calls the "ideal modern biography" of Patrick, the saint often credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. In his work, Bury concurs with various scholars on certain aspects of Patrick's life, but adds his own details and challenges others with sensitivity to the cult of legend and tradition that has become part of the Patrick story. Sweeney assembles and rearranges material from Bury's original work and incorporates more of Patrick's own words, from his Confession and Letter against Coroticus. Sweeney's light edits to Bury's text clarify exactly what Patrick did in Ireland, noting that although he did convert some pagan kingdoms, he also was responsible for organizing Christians who were already there and connecting the island with the church of the Roman Empire. Readers with a scholarly interest in Patrick and Irish history will find this most appealing. (Sept.)
The Lotus Still Blooms: Sacred Buddhist Teachings for the Western Mind
Joan Gattuso. Penguin/Tarcher, $14.95 paper (208p) ISBN 978-1-58542-637-9
The author, a Unity minister and writer who has studied Buddhism with such masters as the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh, tries to cram a lot of Buddhism into a basic manual, and the result is confusing and shallow. The multiple lists of fours, fives and eights by which Buddhism has organized its distinctive concepts run together or are under-explained (e.g., four paragraphs on compassion). The prose is pedestrian ("By acknowledging the full spectrum of our human experiences, we take the crucial first step toward alleviating our suffering"). This much material needs better organization, including visual cues through boxes, subheads and indents. Exposition in chapters could have followed a pattern to help the reader move through complex schemes. Some material could have been eliminated altogether (e.g., the four factors) to allow more room to explain such fundamentals as the Four Noble Truths. There are better Buddhism 101s available; don't pick this lotus. (Aug. 14)
