Layoffs Hit Baker & Taylor
By Judith Rosen
In what could be a foretaste of things to come if retail sales continue to fall, Baker & Taylor laid off 80 employees last week. Industry sources told PW Daily that the bulk of the layoffs came from B&T headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., as well as from Bridgewater, N.J. Several jobs were also cut at B&T Marketing Services in San Diego, Calif., which the wholesaler acquired from Advanced Marketing Services and which handles sales to membership warehouse clubs.

B&T spokesperson Jenny Johnson declined to confirm or deny any restructuring at the company.

Publishers Win Copyright Infringement Suit
By Calvin Reid
A U.S. District Court has ruled in favor of four college educational publishers, ruling that two foreign online booksellers are guilty of copyright infringement for illegally importing into the U.S. textbook editions that were produced only for distribution in overseas markets. Judge Sidney H. Stein of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District fo New York awarded the four publishers—McGraw-Hill Education, Pearson Education, Inc., John Wiley & Sons Inc. and Cengage Learning—$125,000 in damages, and permanently enjoined Jun Liao and Zhengshu Go, the two online booksellers, from further infringing actions on the plaintiffs' copyrights. PowerHouse Sells Out First Printing of Obama Book
By Lynn Andriani
PowerHouse Books sold out its first 55,000-copy first edition of Yes We Can: Barack Obama’s History-Making Presidential Campaign, featuring photographs by Scout Tufankjian, nearly a month before its scheduled mid-December release date. The house has ordered a second printing of 25,000 copies to arrive at the same time.

Yes We Can includes more than 200 color photographs by Tufankjian, the only independent photographer to cover Obama’s entire campaign from before he announced his run through the Election Night celebration in Chicago’s Grant Park.

Tufankjian largely financed the project himself, using credit cards, so the sold out first printing will certainly be a boon to the photographer.
