Baker & Taylor Moving California Warehouse to Indianapolis
Baker & Taylor is closing its Woodland, Calif. distribution center and moving its inventory and services into its Indianapolis facility. The California warehouse is home to Baker & Taylor Marketing Services, the wholesale club division consisting mainly of the assets acquired two years ago from AMS when that company went bankrupt. B&T said it will continue to service the wholesale clubs from Indianapolis. Read on »

Discovery Communications Files Patent Suit Against the Kindle
Discovery Communications, parent company of the Discovery Channel, has sued Amazon, accusing the online retailer's Kindle of infringing its patent on electronic book technology. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Delaware, and claims that the technology related to e-book security used by Amazon in the Kindle and Kindle 2 infringes one or more of the claims on a patent that Discovery founder John Hendricks received in November 2007. The patent deals with encryption technology for the distribution of digital books (U.S. Patent Number 7,298,851). Read on »


Wells in Quick Strike for Cheap Eating

Hyperion executive editor Leslie Wells has preempted an untitled account of eating on a dollar a day by high school social studies teachers and bloggers Christopher Greenslate and Kerri Leonard; Lynn Johnston sold North American rights. Greenslate and Leonard (onedollardietproject.wordpress.com) will recount their monthlong experiment in last September to feed themselves on a dollar a day, as does 15% of the world’s population. In the book, they’ll continue their diet up the economic ladder, to food stamp levels and beyond, in an effort to determine the true cost of healthy eating in America. Their blog has attracted 997,000 readers thus far, as well as media attention from The New York Times, People and "Good Morning America." Read on »

Scribd Signs Deals with Major Houses
Scribd, Inc., the “social publishing site” that posts a variety of written documents daily, has signed deals with a number of publishers to post novels, chapters and other content on scribd.com. Among the publishers working with Scribd are the Random House Publishing Group, Simon & Schuster, Workman., Berrett-Koehler, Thomas Nelson and Manning Publications.

According to the company, more than 50,000 new documents are uploaded daily using Scribd’s iPaper reader, which makes it easy to upload, share and embed original writings and documents. Publishers who have signed on say they see using Scribd as a way to give greater exposure to their titles. Links allow users to buy a book. Read on »

Film Rights to 'Hunger Games' Sold

Lionsgate has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film version of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Collins will adapt the screenplay, and Nina Jacobson will produce through Color Force. The futuristic YA novel has been a bestseller since its September 2008 publication. Catching Fire, the second installment in the trilogy, is due out September 1.
