Papercutz to Publish Disney Fairies Graphic Novels

Papercutz, a New York City-based graphic novel publisher focused of teen-aged readers, has reached an agreement to produce a series of graphic novels based on Disney Fairies, a series of bestselling prose chapter books drawn from the novels of Gail Carson Levine and constructed around the well-known Disney fairy character Tinker Bell. The acquisition is the latest deal in a publishing strategy by Papercutz focused on licensing classic prose and comics properties and even popular toy and European comics series and producing book-format comics based on them aimed at the "tweens" market of readers aged 8-14 year old.

Papercutz publisher Terry Nantier said the house will produce four novels a year in both paperback ($7.99) and hardcover ($12.99) based on Disney Fairies; the first titles will appear in April 2010. Nantier said "the graphic novels are all-new stories, not adaptations of existing ones," and said this will be the first time the prose series has been turned into book format comics. "87% of girls aged 6-11 are familiar with Tinker Bell and 45% say she's a favorite," he said. Papercutz will oversee the production of the books and its titles are distributed to the book trade by Macmillan and to the comics shop market by Diamond Comics Distribution. Originally published by Random House, the Disney Fairies chapter books have sold more than 9 million copies worldwide.

A New Century; A New Publisher for Alan Moore's LOEG

In the first two volumes of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O'Neill have chronicled a world in which all of the characters of 19th century fiction are real. Moore and O'Neill turn to the 20th century in Volume 3, titled Century, which itself consists of three books. Top Shelf in America and Knockabout in the United Kingdom have just published the first installment, Century: 1910.

Syncopated: An Anthology of Nonfiction Picto-Essays
EDITED BY BRENDAN BURFORD. Villard, $16 paper (160p) ISBN 978-0-345-50529-3

The big-label relaunch of the once–self-published Syncopated anthologies ("a New Yorker for the comics set") is a uniformly classy affair with only a few slow moments. As the title suggests, the book collects meaty article presented as comics. Series editor and curator Burford contributes two pieces, one of which might be the book's high point: a study of the life of Boris Rose, who built probably the world's largest collection of live jazz recordings, still locked in storage and most of it never heard by anyone but Rose himself. Alex Holden provides an amazing bit of picto-journalism in "West Side Improvements," the story of Manhattan's riverside train tracks and the vibrant graffiti culture that grew in their tunnels. Nick Bertozzi's "How and Why to Bale Hay" is a somewhat traditional graphical memoir; Greg Cook's "What We So Quietly Saw" is anything but traditional, using only silhouettes to tell selected stories from inside Guantánamo Bay. Only Dave Kiersh's "Welcome Home, Brave" fails to fully satisfy, due to a flat narrative. An elegant and smart volume, well worth the space on the collector's shelf. (May)
