Baker & Taylor, Donnelley in Print-on-Demand Pact

Baker & Taylor has signed an agreement with R.R. Donnelley that calls for Donnelley to establish and manage a print-on-demand center in B&T’s Momence, Ill. distribution facility. The deal with Donnelley is the fourth B&T has made over the last few months to establish a digital distribution capability. The agreement with Donnelley, “rounds out our digital product line,” said Bob Nelson, executive v-p of global business development for B&T. Read on »

Ingram Survey Finds Half of Respondents Will Use E-Catalogues

Ingram Marketing Group announced today that about half of respondents it surveyed are “open” to using e-catalogues instead of print catalogs. Kim Reynolds, v-p of Ingram Marketing Group, said there were “some significant surprises” in the survey results. Almost 60% of the 2,000 Ingram customers who responded to the survey reported that they have at some time recently reviewed book titles via an e-catalogue. More than 80% of the respondents were independent booksellers or librarians, and 49% of them said they would be willing to use e-catalogues, as long as the electronic versions were easy to use with “shopping list” functionality and POS download capabilities. Alyson Celebrates at BEA

LGBT publishing will be well-represented at BEA. The 21st annual Lambda Literary Awards will take place tonight, and tomorrow there will be a private party for 150 LGBT writers, booksellers and journalists. On Saturday, Don Weise is inviting booksellers and the press to celebrate the relaunch of Alyson Books at The Gates in Chelsea. Weise was named Alyson publisher late last year. Prior to that, he had been a senior editor at Carroll & Graf from 2003 to 2007, and launched the publisher's gay and lesbian division. Weise said he expects 500 guests at Saturday's party, which he hopes becomes an annual BEA event.

Perseus Unveils 'Book: The Sequel' Timeline
As part of its effort to produce a from book start to finish during BookExpo America, Perseus Books Group has released a timeline of scheduled meetings taking place at its booth and which conventiongoers are invited to observers and in some case participate. Submissions for Book: The Sequel are due by 4 p.m. today at www.bookthesequel.com. Production will start with an editorial meeting Friday at 9 a.m. at the Perseus booth, and will conclude Saturday at 4 p.m. with a launch party. Get the complete schedule after the jump. Read on »

Rosen To Leave PowerHouse Books

After nine years of organizing marketing, publicity and highly unusual special events programming for powerHouse Books, the Brooklyn-based art and photography book publisher, Sara Rosen will leave the company effective June 5. She is launching Miss Rosen, a new media company specializing in “promoting arts and culture in the form of books, exhibitions, workshops, and special events,” and will start a twice-a-month events newsletter called Miss Rosen Presents. Geringer to Work with Egmont USA
Laura Geringer has partnered with Egmont USA, to selectively edit titles for the house on a nonexclusive basis. “We felt she could bring something dynamic to our list,” said Doug Pocock, executive v-p at Egmont. “She’s bringing her editorial expertise. Panel to Examine the State of the Book Buying Consumer
A panel discussion examining who buys what books and where they buy them is set for Friday, May 29 at 2:30 in room 1D05 at the Javits Center. The presentation will draw on material developed by Bowker’s PubTrack Consumer book survey and featured in the upcoming 2008 Book Consumer Demographics & Buying Behaviors Annual Report, which is being co-published by Bowker PubTrack and PW. The session will also examine the growing appetite for print on demand and e-books.
