First Bite
Talk about silver linings: despite the startling news of Gourmet's closure last week, the magazine's new cookbook, Gourmet Today, seems to be going strong; Ruth Reichl is touring the country promoting the book, and publisher Houghton Mifflin is reporting brisk sales. Sadly, though, the Gourmet Cookbook Club will cease with the November issue. This edition of Cooking the Books features some news on the Club, as well as an interview with Thomas Keller, a story on a potentially big holiday book for foodies, and some culinary and literary highlights from a recent trip to the West Coast. • Barron's Revamps Bestselling Culinary Reference
It’s still early to predict which food books will be most popular this holiday season, but The Deluxe Food Lover’s Companion could be in the running. It is the fifth edition of a popular culinary reference book that was first released 19 years ago and has sold more than a million copies since then. And at $29.95, it’s a rare example of the “deluxe” book also being the wallet-friendly book. more » » »
  • Sampling Food, Books and the Schnitzelwich in California and Oregon
Last week I visited the West Coast, spending time in San Francisco, Napa Valley and Portland, Ore., and while I knew all three places deserved a place on any foodie’s map, I wasn’t prepared for the breadth of offerings. Food carts, coffee stands and bakeries deserve just as many accolades as Thomas Keller’s temples of cuisine. Cookbook fans and armchair travelers, take note. more » » »
  • Cooking the Books with Thomas Keller
Chef Thomas Keller may be known for his high-end cooking (miniature salmon tartare ice cream cone, anyone?), but his newest book, Ad Hoc at Home, is his most accessible yet. Keller took a few minutes on a recent afternoon to sit in the yard outside The French Laundry in Napa Valley, California, to talk about why he loves comfort food. more » » »
  • Short Order: October 12
It's party time! Louisa Edwards celebrated the release of her debut novel, Can't Stand the Heat (St. Martin's) at New York's Blue Hill restaurant; Lara Starr feted her new cookbook, The Frugal Foodie Cookbook (Viva Editions) in San Rafael, Calif.; and pastry chef Karen DeMasco (pictured) got happy about her new tome, The Craft of Baking (Clarkson Potter) at Locanda Verde in Manhattan. Also, news on Gourmet. more » » »
  • Review: B. Smith Cooks Southern-Style
Southern cooking—both contemporary and traditional—may be having its moment, and it gets a friendly cookbook treatment from celebrated African-American lifestyle restaurateur B. Smith. While Smith has authored two books on entertaining and operated her iconic B. Smith restaurants for years, she actually considers this her cookbook debut, which she says was inspired by her desire to share her love of Southern food while giving it an update. more » » »

  • Recipe Report: October 12
Fresh Cavatelli with Eggs and Bacon from Lidia Bastianich's Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy: A Feast of 175 Regional Recipes (Knopf, Oct.) could also be called breakfast pasta, with its hefty portions of slab bacon, eggs and shredded Fontina Val d'Aosta. It's a delicious combination, with the eggs lightly cooked and custardy, and the bacon crisped up and caramelized. I made this with frozen cavatelli from a local pasta shop, though homemade fresh cavatelli would be even better. Click here for the recipe.
