Sara Lloyd Kicks Off First European TOC
By Rachel Deahl
Most seats were taken at the opening keynote for the first Tools of Change Conference in Europe, taking place on Tuesday, one day before this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. Sara Lloyd of Pan Macmillan kicked off the event, continuing a speech she gave at the TOC in New York in February and formally dubbed in Frankfurt “Revisiting a Publishing Manifesto: What Does the Future Look Like for Publishers?”

While some attendees may have been grumbling about the wi-fi outage at the Radisson Blue Hotel, where the conference took place, only a smattering of attendees with netbooks and laptops seemed affected, and most were abated by O’Reilly’s offer of cable hookups. Read on »

Entrekin Selling Portion of Stake in Grove Atlantic London
By Liz Thomson
As has been widely predicted since Anthony Cheetham came aboard, Toby Mundy, chairman and publisher of Grove Atlantic London (GAL) has announced a restructure designed to "provide the company with the resources and the strategy to take its place amongst the leaders in the UK's independent publishing sector."

Morgan Entrekin, CEO at Grove Atlantic Inc (GAI), who has been the majority shareholder, is selling "a portion" of his shares but will remain "a significant minority shareholder and trading partner." Entrekin will continue to sit on the board of the London company. Mundy believes the sale will "confirm GAL's status as a self-standing independent, rather than a subsidiary of its U.S.-based parent." Read on »

University of Nebraska Back to Press for 'Nadirs'
For the second year in a row, the University of Nebraska Press is using Lightning Source to meet demand for a Nobel prize-winner. UNP is the publisher of Herta Mueller’s short story collection, Nadirs, and found itself nearly out-of-stock when demand spiked for Mueller’s works after she won the Noble Prize for Literature last week. As of Friday, UNP had 3,000 backorders from customers around the world, a spokesperson said. To meet demand, UNP teamed up with Lightning, just as it did last year when another UNP author, Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, won the Nobel. New copies of Nadirs began shipping over the weekend. In a statement, UNP said it “will do what is necessary” to meet the demand for the title, using both POD and offset printing.
