Barnes & Noble Unveils the Nook 3G/Wi-fi Digital Reader

Turns out that the mysterious photos released last week of a rumored Barnes & Noble-sponsored digital reader were the real deal. B&N CEO Steve Riggio along with B&N.com president William Lynch were on hand to show off the new device—called the nook—at a packed press conference on the west side of Manhattan Tuesday afternoon. The nook is an unusual dual screen digital reader—it has 6” grayscale e-ink display screen with a full color backlit touch control screen situated just below—that raises the ante on E-Ink devices. The nook offers a virtual keyboard, 2 GB of internal memory with expandable (16 gig) SD card and 5 different fonts. Read on »

Goldklang to Globe Pequot Press
Janice Goldklang, the former publisher of Knopf’s Pantheon Books imprint, landed at Globe Pequot Press today after leaving Random House Inc. as part of a restructuring earlier this year. She will have responsibility for GPP’s trade imprints, including Lyons Press, Skirt! Books and Three Forms. Read on »


Encounter's New Imprint Crashes Short Books

New York independent Encounter Books is creating a new imprint, Encounter Broadsides, which will publish 6,000-word titles by conservative writers on a tight turnaround schedule. The first books in the series are all 48-page, $5.99 paperbacks: How the Obama Administration Threatens to Undermine Our Elections by John Fund (Nov. 3), Why Obama’s Government Takeover of Health Care Will Be a Disaster by Dr. David Gratzer (Nov. 10) and Obama’s Betrayal of Israel by Michael A. Ledeen (Nov. 24). Works by Stephen Moore on the Obama administration’s economic policies, Andrew C. McCarthy on the politicization of the justice department and Michael Barone on immigration are slated for the coming weeks. Titles will also be available in Kindle editions. Read on »

HaperOne Signs Pyschic Sylvia Browne
HarperCollins's San Francisco-based imprint, HarperOne, has inked psychic (and bestseller) Sylvia Browne to a three-book deal. The contract calls for Browne to publish the titles over the course of three years and will also see HarperOne create The Sylvia Browne Collection, a series that will feature books about spirituality and the supernatural that Browne will have a large roll, per the publisher, in selecting and also supporting through various ways, from writing introductions to promoting on her Web site. Cronin Moving to RH's Sub Rights Department
Denise Cronin has been named v-p of subsidiary rights for the Random House Publishing Group, filling a position that has been open since Rebecca Gardner left in late September to be rights director at the Gernert Company. Cronin is leaving her post as v-p and director of sub rights at Farrar, Straus & Giroux and Henry Holt for the RHPG job. She will start in her new position on November 2.

Cronin will be overseeing sub rights activity for all of the group imprints at Random House: Random House, Ballantine, Bantam Dell, Del Rey, Dial Press, Modern Library, and Spiegel & Grau.
