August Bookstore Sales Rise
For one of the few times this year, August gains in bookstore sales outpaced increases posted by the entire retail segment. According to preliminary estimates from the Census Bureau, bookstore sales rose 5.4% in August, helped no doubt by solid sales in college bookstores. Sales for all of retail were flat. For the first eight months of the year, bookstore sales were up 2.4%, to $11.24 billion, while the entire retail segment had a 2.8% increase.

Frankfurt Deals Report: The British Leading the Charge

It's the British who are grabbing the spotlight at Frankfurt right now. Although the rights tent has yet to buzz about the book of the fair, two major deals are currently underway for novels by U.K. authors. The first buzz-worthy deal is for a book called Heresy by S.J. Parriss that is currently on auction in the U.K. with two high six figures offers on the table. Rep'd by Curtis Brown, the novel, which is set in the late 1500's in England and is the first in a planned series, follows a "renegade monk" who stumbles on a series of murders at the University of Oxford while working undercover there (in the Queen's service) to foil Catholic assassination schemes being hatched against the monarch. Parriss is a pseudonym for Stephanie Merritt, who's written two novels published by Faber as well as the memoir The Devil Within. Read on »


Adiga Wins Booker

Aravind Adiga has won the 2008 Man Booker prize for his debut novel, White Tiger. U.S. publisher Fress Press just released the trade paper yesterday and is making plans for going back to press. Read on »

Da Capo to Publish McCartney Bio

Da Capo executive editor Ben Schafer has acquired U.S. rights to a new biography of Sir Paul McCartney by Howard Sounes, and the house plans to publish the book, working title The Life of Paul McCartney, in the fall of 2010. Harper will publish simultaneously in the U.K., as will Doubleday in Canada. Kate Lee at ICM made the sale at auction, and translation rights have already been sold in Germany, Denmark, Holland and Finland. Read on »

Bonnier Publishing Names John Owen Group Publisher

Bonnier Publishing CEO Des Higgins announced today the appointment of John Owen as group publisher. Owen co-founded the Weldon Owen publishing group in 1985 and remained its primary owner until 2006 when he sold the company to Bonnier Publishing, remaining as chairman and CEO. Higgins said Owen’s new role will be “to help identify global opportunities where our individual companies can work together.” Read on »

Job Moves
Jordan Brown has been hired as editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books imprint Walden Pond Press. Brown, who will start October 20, will report to Brenda Bowen. He had been an assistant editor to Ginee Seo at her imprint at Atheneum. In the Harper publicity department, Leslie Cohen has been promoted to executive director, Harper. Cohen has been at HC for eight years and in her new position she will have greater involvement in managing the department. Jane Beirn has been promoted to senior director, Harper. Beirn has been at HC for nearly 20 and has worked on the campaigns of a variety of literary authors and is heading up the promotion for Jonathan Littell's The Kindly Ones Read on »
