'Cat in the Hat' Goes Yiddish

by Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 10/21/2002

If Bolchazy-Carducci can find a market for Latin editions of The Cat in the Hat (News, Sept. 30), why not Yiddish? Husband-and-wife team Zackary Sholem Berger and Celeste Sollod have formed Twenty-fourth Street Books, with the objective of publishing Yiddish translations of children's books. The first project, set for release next August, is The Cat in the Hat (Di Kats der Payats).

The book is being translated by Berger, who has done Yiddish-English translations for, among others, the U.N. and New York City. The couple plan to market the book themselves through such venues as Yiddish-language and Jewish-interest newspapers, Jewish book festivals and Yiddish classes around the world. Sollod said while she and her husband have a number of ideas for further Yiddish translations of popular children's books, as well as other Judaica, they won't commit to a second book until they see how The Cat in the Hat does. "We expect it to return the money invested and sufficient capital for the next title," Sollod said. Sollod, who is an editor at a New York house, added that both she and her husband "are not quitting our day jobs."
