Rob Pulleyn, publisher of Lark Books in Asheville, N.C., is smitten with motor vehicles that are dolled up to look like, say, mammoth hamburgers or giant sharks. "When I saw pictures of these wild and wacky cars, I thought, 'This would be a really neat book,'" he recalls. The executive even purchased a used 1983 Volvo station wagon and induced Lark's staff to create an art car of its very own. "It has a garden theme," Pulleyn discloses. "It has a sprinkler on the front, a picket fence around the outside, and a bed of plastic flowers on top." His preoccupation with truly mobile art sped forward, then stalled. "We canceled the book. It didn't look right," he confesses. That was in 1999. Later, Pulleyn crossed paths with an art car fanatic who had filmed a PBS documentary on his passion in 1992. Pulleyn's pet project was suddenly back in the fast lane. In March, Lark will publish Art Cars: The Cars, the Artists, the Obsession, the Craft by Harrod Blank. And what about Lark's visionary garden on wheels? "We keep it in a garage three blocks from here," notes Pulleyn. "It doesn't run well."
