Kurtzman Leaves DC Comics for Hyperion

by Calvin Reid, PW Daily -- Publishers Weekly, 11/22/2005

Less than four months after joining DC Comics as director of marketing, Nellie Kurtzman is leaving the comics publisher to become director of marketing at Hyperion Books for Children.

Although Kurtzman acknowledged that the timing of the job switch "is weird, but life's like that." Kurtzman noted that her background (she was formerly with S&S Children's group) is in traditional children's book publishing, and that Hyperion had "made a great offer," she couldn't pass up.

Her arrival at DC Comics caught the attention of comics industry observers as part of the ongoing effort by comics publishers to add more book publishing expertise. She is the daughter of the late Harvey Kurtzman, a much-respected comics editor, artist and cofounder of Mad magazine.
