The man that came up with the "Contract with America" in 1994—effectively birthing 12 years of Republican congressional hegemony—has turned his attention to the environment. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, along with conservationist Terry L. Maple, have written A Contract with the Earth, which the Johns Hopkins University Press will publish on November 1, 2007.
In a move that many in the political establishment may find mildly ironic, Gingrich and Maple, according to Kathy Alexander, publicity manager at JHUP, "declare a need for 'bipartisan environmentalism,' as they call for a new era of environmental stewardship," which will enable the U.S. to reclaim its role as the world's leader on environmental issues.
"While acknowledging that liberals and conservatives do not see eye to eye on many issues," said Alexander, "Gingrich and Maple argue successfully that environmental stewardship is a mainstream value that transcends partisan politics." The foundation of the book is a 10-point "Contract with the Earth" that Alexander said "promotes ingenuity over rhetoric as the way forward."
