Gordon Lee Trial to Start Nov. 5

By Calvin Reid -- Publishers Weekly, 10/31/2007 6:46:00 AM

The much delayed trial of Rome Ga. comics shop retailer Gordon Lee is now set to go trial November 5. Lee is charged with two misdemeanor counts of distributing materials harmful to minors, in a case stemming from a promotional event at his store in 2004 where a free comic book containing nudity was given to a minor. He faces penalties of a year in jail and a $1,000 fine for each count.

Lee's defense is being coordinated by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund which has spent nearly $100,000 to defend him. Lee claims that the comic was mistakenly given to the minors and that the charges and penalities are excessive. "For three years Gordon has had to live with the tormenting reality of this case," explained CBLDF executive director Charles Brownstein, "all for something that shouldn't have been prosecuted in the first place. We look forward to taking this case to trial."
