Gentlemen at Variety,
For the past year and one half I have read most all of your very
informative, intelligent reviews, and strangely for the most part, I
agree with your reviewers.
However, there''s always one BAD apple in a group, and in this case
that would happen to be Rob Nelson, who is not only a bad writer, but
he''s dismissive, dislikes most everything (in part or whole), writes less
than a paragraph of his diatribe and never backs up his slams.
When you have Todd McCarthy, Joe Leyton and a slew of other
wonderful critics, how can you assign someone as irresponsible and as
consistently predictable as Mr. Nelson? Aside from appearing to hate
his job, his writing is inept - he doesn''t even hit a Grade 5 level, let
alone come close to the insightful work of your other talented critics.
He''s obviously a stringer for you, but in this case I''m afraid he''s
stringing you along with his shabby, dismissive and embarrassing
quote unquote "reviews". If you don''t believe me, just reread his work
for yourselves, it''s downright bad. And no matter what you pay him,
it''s far too much. I know two dozen other people who feel exactly the
same as I do, and it''s now becoming a bad joke among many of your
readership.
It''s hard to call out a film critic/reviewer without being questioning of
his talents as a journalist. I''ll read anyone, but I''ve had it with Mr
Nelson. At best he should be writing for an angry leftist monthly blog
site. His insights are more like rants, and bad ones at that.
You guys can do better, much better.
Cathy Thomas
