SOAPBOX: A 700-word guest op-ed column runs on the magazine’s back page. Always provocative and surprising, the essays range in tone from humorous to fierce. Anyone in the industry is eligible to write one. Past contributors have included authors, editorial assistants, publishers, marketing and publicity executives and booksellers. Approaches that have worked well include 1) a strong reaction to a recent news story or current publishing controversy; 2) dissent on current conventional wisdom; 3) reflections on the ways that editors and others have found new meaning in the age-old rituals of publishing.
