Coming Together for ‘Fall Apart’

Last week, debut author Arlaina Tibensky had a launch party at Books of Wonder in New York City for her YA novel And Then Things Fall Apart (Simon Pulse, July), about teenage Keek, who relies on a copy of The Bell Jar and an old typewriter to figure out how her summer went so wrong. Tibensky read from and signed copies of the book and answered audience questions, and Sylvia Plath masks were also on hand for photo-ops.

Jane Paley celebrated her first novel, Hooper Finds a Family: A Hurricane Katrina Dog's Survival Tale (Harper, June) in a big way, with a launch event last month at Yankee Stadium in New York City. The book follows the fictional story of a dog stranded by floodwaters in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and eventually finding a new home with a family in New York. Paley (l.) signed copies of her book at the event, and Hooper (who showed his team loyalty with a Yankees cap) made an appearance as well. Photo: M.S. Farrell.

History and Mystery

Adult mystery novelist Kathryn Miller Haines (the Miss Winter series) is launching her first YA mystery series this summer, and she celebrated the release of the first book, The Girl Is Murder (Roaring Brook, July) at a party last month at the Mystery Lovers Bookshop in Oakmont, Pa., outside Pittsburgh. Set in 1942, the story follows 15-year-old Iris, who’s drawn into the private-eye world of her father, a veteran who was injured at Pearl Harbor.
