Pete the Cat’s Train Trip by James Dean. HarperCollins, $3.99; ISBN 978-0-06-230385-1. An My First I Can Read volume sees the bestselling character as a train conductor.

A Book of Spirits and Thieves by Morgan Rhodes. Razorbill, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-59514-759-2. A new high fantasy alternates perspectives and places, between modern-day Toronto and the ancient realm of Mytica, where a magical force brings different characters together before it starts to drive them apart.

Calling Maggie May by Anonymous. Simon Pulse, $9.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-3901-5. In the tradition of Go Ask Alice, a found diary reveals the story of a teen who makes a series of choices that leads her to life as a sex worker.

Little Critter: Just a Teacher’s Pet by Mercer Mayer. HarperCollins, $3.99; ISBN 978-0-06-147819-2. This addition to the I Can Read series deals with a classmate’s jealousy.

My Weirdest School #2: Ms. Cuddy Is Nutty! by Dan Gutman. HarperCollins, $4.99; ISBN 978-0-06-228424-2. The adventures in this spin-off of the Weird School series continue; this time, the school is given a million dollars and the students attempt to build a TV studio.

When the Earth Shakes: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tsunamis by Simon Winchester. Viking, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-670-78536-0. The bestselling author of adult nonfiction titles including Krakatoa offers his first book for young readers.

The House That Jane Built: A Story About Jane Addams by Tanya Lee Stone, illus. by Kathryn Brown. Holt/Ottaviano, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-8050-9049-9. The latest picture book biography from Stone follows the famous social worker and sociologist as she establishes a settlement home in 1889 Chicago; the book earned a starred review from PW.
