Mary Colgan at Boyds Mills Press has bought Andrew DeYoung's debut YA, The Girl from Beyond, and a second untitled YA, in a pre-empt. The novel tells the story of Matthew, a teen sent in search of a replacement for Earth to the planet Gle'ah, where he falls in love with the leader of a primitive tribe there. Publication is scheduled for fall 2016; with the second book in 2017. John Rudolph of Dystel & Goderich Literary Management negotiated the deal for North American rights.

Michelle Frey at Knopf has acquired Richard Michelson's (l.) Fascinating: The Life of Leonard Nimoy, illustrated by Edel Rodriguez, a biography of the Star Trek legend known forever as Spock, written by his long-time friend and gallerist. Publication is scheduled for fall 2016. The author represented himself and Holly McGhee at Pippin Properties represented the illustrator in the deal for world rights.

Mark Siegel at First Second has acquired The Well, a YA fantasy graphic novel by Jake Wyatt, illustrated by F. Choo. The book follows Lizzy, a girl who steals coins from the town wishing well and is then forced to grant the wishes attached to them. Publication is set for 2018; Charlie Olsen at Inkwell did the deal for world English rights.

Calista Brill at First Second has bought The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang, a graphic novel that tells the story of a cross-dressing teen prince, the seamstress who creates his clothes, and their struggle with their feelings for each other and the prevailing societal norms. Publication is planned for 2017; Judy Hansen at Hansen Literary brokered the deal for world rights.

Phoebe Yeh at Crown has acquired three books in Galia Oz's bestselling Shakshuka series from Israel. It will be published as one middle-grade volume titled Dog Trouble & Other Julie Storiesfeaturing Julie's candid narration of the ups and downs of school and family life. Publication is scheduled for 2017; Erica Rand Silverman of Sterling Lord Literistic brokered the deal for U.S. rights on behalf of Deborah Harris at the Deborah Harris Agency.

Alyssa Mito Pusey at Charlesbridge has bought Struttin' with Some Barbecue, a middle-grade book in verse about jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader Lil Hardin Armstrong by Patricia Hruby Powell. Ahead of her time and in a man's world, Lil Hardin Armstrong – Louis Armstrong's second wife – made a career in the early days of jazz. Publication is slated for fall 2017; Anna Olswanger of Olswanger Literary negotiated the deal for world rights.

Kelly Delaney at Knopf has acquired Will Buckingham's Lucy and the Rocket Dog, a middle-grade story told from the alternating perspectives of Lucy, an aspiring astrophysicist who has built a rocket ship in her backyard, and Laika, Lucy's beloved dog who wanders into the rocket ship and is subsequently shot into space. Publication is set for summer 2017; Marilyn Malin of Marilyn Malin Consultancy did the deal for world rights.

Stephanie Lurie at Disney-Hyperion acquired Eric Pinder's (l.) The Perfect Pillow, illustrated by Chris Sheban, the tale of a boy in search of just the right bedtime spot. It's scheduled for fall 2017; Ammi-Joan Paquette of the Erin Murphy Literary Agency brokered the deal for the author for world rights, and Rosemary Stimola of the Stimola Literary Studio brokered the deal for the illustrator for world English rights.

Kelly Barrales-Saylor at Albert Whitman has bought world rights to One More Dino on the Floor by Kelly Starling-Lyons, a rhyming picture book with music, dancing, rhythm, counting, and dinosaurs. Luke Flowers is set to illustrate. Publication will be in spring 2016; Caryn Wiseman at the Andrea Brown Literary Agency represented the author and Anne Moore Armstrong at the Bright Literary Agency represented the illustrator.

Andrea Welch at S&S's Beach Lane Books has acquired Big-Eyed Bug by Anne Marie Pace (l.), illustrated by Frann Preston-Gannon, a picture book that celebrates the wonders of a city park through eyes big and small. Publication is scheduled for spring 2018. Sylvie Frank at S&S's Paula Wiseman Books has bought world rights to Lisa Mantchev's (l.) new picture book, Jinx and the Doom Fight Crime, illustrated by Samantha Cotterill. In the book, a brother and sister who used to fight each other team up to save the planet before bedtime. Nagler and Jenna Lettice at Random House have acquired Susan Adrian's Nutcracked, about a girl cast as the lead in the Nutcracker ballet, who is transported to a magical world every time she dances with an antique Nutcracker. Grace Macarrone at Holiday House has bought Zeep and Peep by author-illustrator Adam Gudeon, in which an bird and alien become lost and flightless, but with the help of an inventor frog they strive to fly once more. Lucia Monfried at Dial has acquired author-illustrator Rosalinde Bonnet's Daddy Honk Honk, about a fox who must learn the ins and outs of parenthood when a little gosling imprints on him. Publication is planned for fall 2017; Abigail Samoun at Red Fox Literary brokered the deal for world English rights.


Alison Weiss at Sky Pony has bought Matthew Landis's YA debut, The Judas Society, in which a teen attending his no-good father's funeral discovers that he is the last descendant of America's most notorious traitor, and gets drawn into a feud between the heroes and villains of the Revolutionary War that stretches back centuries. Publication is tentatively scheduled for spring 2017; Lauren Galit of LKG Agency did the deal for world rights.
