Hitting shelves next week are a picture book about a hedgehog seeking a “friend ship,” a middle grade adventure story set in the skies, and a YA adaptation of a nonfiction book about little-known NASA mathematicians.

Diplomatic Immunity by Brodi Ashton. Balzer + Bray, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-06-236856-0. Ashton (the Evernight trilogy) delivers a romance between Piper Baird, an aspiring reporter who will do anything to get a scoop, and Raf Amador, a well-meaning but somewhat misguided playboy and son of the Spanish ambassador to the United States.

Groundhog’s Runaway Shadow by David Biedrzycki. Charlesbridge, $16.95; ISBN 978-1-58089-734-1. In this picture book, Punxsutawney resident Phil, a furry brown groundhog, and his shadow have been constant companions but are growing apart, both in terms of personal proclivities (“Phil loved scary movies. Shadow, not so much”) and all-around outlook (“Phil liked to be on time. Shadow liked to stop and smell the roses”).

Jed and the Junkyard War by Steven Bohls. Disney-Hyperion, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-4847-2923-6. This middle grade adventure novel, a debut for Bohls, thrusts 12-year-old Jed Jenkins into an alternate universe where boats fly through the air and wage battle over a vast landscape of junk.

Spindle by E.K. Johnston. Hyperion, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-4847-2228-2. The second volume in Johnston’s Thousand Nights series is set 1,500 years after the events of the first book, and centers on the crumbling of the prison that the Storyteller Queen built to protect her kingdom.

Yoga Bunny by Brian Russo. HarperCollins, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-06-242952-0. In this picture book, a bunny shows yoga poses to his friends in order to help solve their problems.

Hidden Figures: Young Readers’ Edition by Margot Lee Shetterly. HarperCollins, $6.99 paper; ISBN 978-0-06-266237-8. In the YA edition of her nonfiction book, Shetterly tells the story of four female African-American mathematicians who were instrumental in breakthroughs within the NASA space program.

The Friend Ship by Kat Yeh, illus. by Chuck Groenink. Disney-Hyperion, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-4847-0726-5. As Hedgehog lies in a “lonely little nook of a lonely little tree,” she hears someone say, “Friendship is out there – all she has to do is look.” She thinks friendship is a real ship – Groenink (Rufus the Writer) supplies a sepia-toned diagram of its masts and sails – and sets off in her own ship to find it.
