Hitting shelves next week are a picture book about a girl, her unicorn, and a new friend; a middle grade graphic novel about a boy raised as a bloodhound; and a YA novel about siblings coping with loss.

Monkey Brother by Adam Auerbach. Holt/Ottaviano, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-62779-600-2. In this picture book, Auerbach’s unnamed narrator claims that his younger brother is an actual monkey, and it’s hard not to empathize: the sibling is a wily, gravity-defying pest with limitless energy and some serious boundary issues.

Time Out! by Ale Barba. Philomel, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-399-16304-3. This picture book is about a stint in time out, starring a small pig in a striped shirt; his infraction involves skateboarding indoors. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Eden Summer by Liz Flanagan. Scholastic/Fickling, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-338-12120-9. In this YA novel, best friends Jess Mayfield and Eden Holby have enjoyed a lot of good times, but lately they’ve needed to support each other through some very difficult events. When Eden goes missing from their Yorkshire tourist town, Jess realizes that she may not know everything about Eden.

Stealing Our Way Home by Cecilia Galante. Scholastic Press, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-338-04296-2. Galante’s middle grade novel—told in alternating chapters by 10-year-old Pippa and her 12-year-old brother, Jack—explores sibling bonds, parental fallibility, and coping with death. The book earned a starred review from PW.

The Glittering Court: Midnight Jewel by Richelle Mead. Razorbill, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-59514-843-8. The second volume in Mead’s Glittering Court continues the YA trilogy about teens seeking freedom in a world of opulence.

Aftercare Instructions: A Novel by Bonnie Pipkin. Flatiron, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-250-11484-6. As Pipkin’s YA debut opens, 17-year-old Genesis Johnson has been abandoned at Planned Parenthood by her boyfriend, Peter, while she’s getting an abortion.

Life by Cynthia Rylant, illus. by Brendan Wenzel. Beach Lane, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-5162-8. Rylant (Creation) looks to the natural world for wisdom and consolation as Wenzel’s (They All Saw a Cat) lush, heavily worked artwork imagines a primordial Earth with few signs of human existence. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Now I Rise by Kiersten White. Delacorte, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-553-52235-8. The sequel to And I Darken, the second book in a YA trilogy, follows Lada Dracul as she fights to regain her claim to the throne.

Making Scents by Arthur Yorinks, illus. by Braden Lamb and Shelli Paroline. First Second, $15.99; ISBN 978-1-59643-452-3. Yorinks’s middle grade graphic novel opens as a couple that keeps bloodhounds finds a baby under a tree. They treat Mickey like one of their dogs, insisting that he learn to track like the hounds do.

A New Friend for Sparkle by Amy Young. Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-374-30553-6. Lucy and her goatish pet unicorn from A Unicorn Named Sparkle bring another friend into the mix in a picture book sequel that recognizes that three can be a crowd.
