This past Tuesday, the Children’s Book Council’s Early Career Committee, a networking group for those new to children’s book publishing, held a Harry Potter trivia night that tested their knowledge of the ins and outs of J.K. Rowling’s fictional universe with questions about spells, characters, and other Potter lore. The event, hosted by the CBC’s Mary Van Akin, co-chair of the Early Career Committee, took place at the CBC’s offices, which the committee’s board members decorated with hand-painted house crests, origami snitches, flying keys, and more. Using a homemade Sorting Hat, 60 attendees, most of whom have been in publishing for fewer than five years, were divided into teams, competing not just for Harry Potter trivia dominance, but for best costume and best team name, too.
