Robert Frost (and S.E. Hinton) had it right: nothing gold can stay. In the wake of a banner 2012, children’s book sales across all formats fell off at the beginning of 2013, according to the Association of American Publishers. Hardcover sales took a major hit, down 29.3% in January 2013 compared with January 2012. And e-book sales, which had been showing strong month over month growth for some time, dropped even more, down 36.2%. A major factor: sales of the three Hunger Games books in hardcover, which in January 2012 totaled 389,280 units according to Nielsen BookScan, dropped to 63,440 units in January 2013; the overall downturn in children’s e-book sales was likely due to the same titles. It remains to be seen whether the Catching Fire movie, due out November 22, will goose sales later this year – or whether a brand-new franchise will step up.
