Kids seem to need no extra incentive for opening up the books in Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid series, which has more than 115 million copies in print worldwide and has remained consistently on bestseller lists since its debut in 2007. Now, Abrams/Amulet is “egging on” readers to give Diary of a Wimpy Kid #8: Hard Luck a second look, with a spring sweepstakes focused on the novel’s illustrations.

For the first time in the series, Kinney incorporated a seek-and-find feature into the art for this latest installment – the overall top-selling book in the U.S. in 2013 – and hid eggs in most of its line drawings. From now until April 20, the publisher is encouraging kids to find the secreted eggs and visit the series' website to register a guess as to the total number of eggs Kinney tucked into the book’s pictures. While on the site, readers can play an interactive egg-hunt game featuring Kinney’s art.

According to Jason Wells, executive director of publicity and marketing for Abrams Books for Young Readers, a number of observant fans had earlier cracked the egg conundrum in Hard Luck and have brought their egg sightings to the publisher’s attention; the promotion is meant to draw more kids into the game. At the close of the sweepstakes, one entrant out of those who counted the eggs correctly will be chosen at random to win a “Wimpified” portrait of herself or himself, hand-drawn by Jeff Kinney in his signature style. Fifty runners-up, also randomly chosen, will receive signed copies of Hard Luck. With all the Kinney fans out there, winning will take some good – rather than hard – luck.
