Mixing It Up!

During his U.S. and Canadian tour for his children’s art book, Mix it Up! (Chronicle). Herve Tullet visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on October 12, where hundreds of kids joined him to take part in an outdoor painting project, with Tullet providing the prompt: “You are all my little brushes.” Tullet’s tour, which runs throughout October, culminates with a celebration at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, which is hosting an exhibit of his original paintings. The exhibit is on display from October 2 to February 1.

A Frankfurt Milestone

Author Irene Smalls ran a booth at the Frankfurt International Book Fair for her company, 2GoGlobalMarketing, which promotes American authors from diverse backgrounds. According to Elizabeth Walsch, commercial specialist with the U.S. Consulate General, this is the first time that a female and African-American owned business has been an exhibitor at the fair. On October 9, Smalls (r.) met with Kevin C. Milas (l.), U.S. Consul General of Frankfurt, and his wife, Eileen, at the 2GoGlobalMarketing booth.

A Record Launch

Visiting all the way from Australia, Simmone Howell enjoyed a Brooklyn launch party for her book Girl Defective. Since Howell’s protagonist Skylark lives above a record shop, the event was fittingly held at Academy Records store in Greenpoint. The independent bookstore WORD Brooklyn sold books at the October 14 event. A cohort of the author’s friends and colleagues enjoyed perusing records (and displaying some of their favorites) during the event: (from l.) Denise St. Pierre, Cheryl Pientka, Siena Koncsol, Simmone Howell, Reka Simonsen, and Jill Grinberg.

Fierce Eats

Once Upon a Bookstore

Oliver Jeffers talked to a large crowd during the launch party for his newest picture book, Once Upon an Alphabet at Books of Wonder on October 14. About his books, Jeffers said: “They’re not children’s books. They’re picture books. And that’s a big difference.” In fact, a significant portion of the audience members were adult admirers of his work. Here, he signs books for a couple of his younger fans.

Little Sprouts

On Oct. 15, Green Bean Books in Portland, Ore., hosted author and literary agent Erzsi Deàk, who shared her autumn-themed picture book, Pumpkin Time! with local preschoolers from Hummingbird Preschool. After taking part in an interactive reading with Deàk, who is touring the U.S. from her home in southern France, the kids created their own paper bag pumpkins.
