This week, readers “bug out” in D.C.; fellow fantasy book creators join forces; a book launch is fueled by girl power; and a road-tripping author leaves his mark.

As Snug as a Bug in a Hug!

Politics and Prose hosted a celebration of Eric Carle at the store’s Takoma location in Washington, D.C. on March 7. The Very Hungry Caterpillar made a guest appearance, arriving in a decked-out Volkswagen Bug to greet young fans.

Royal Scribes

On March 1 Tony DiTerlizzi was a guest at a screening of The Spiderwick Chronicles, the 2008 film adaptation based on the series he co-created with Holly Black, at the Jean Cocteau Theater in Santa Fe. The theater also had on display several of DiTerlizzi’s illustrations and prints. At the screening, DiTerlizzi (r.) was interviewed by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin (l.).

Gutsy Girls

Author Caroline Paul celebrated the launch of The Gutsy Girl (Bloomsbury), which encourages girls to be bold and brave, on March 5 at The BookSmith in San Francisco. The event drew 285 attendees, including Junior Girl Scouts, Brownies, and other readers – one of whom even performed a song inspired by the book.

The Writing’s on the Wall

While on a road trip tour for his fantasy novel The Keepers #2: The Harp and the Ravenvine (HarperCollins), Ted Sanders visited Frost Elementary and Adolphus Elementary in Richmond, Tex. Seen here, Sanders also made sure to sign the author wall at Blue Willow Bookshop on March 8.
