This week, an author meets President Obama; Grace Lin takes the stage; a bookstore opens its children’s annex; and Shannon Messenger heads on tour.

When Macy Met POTUS

Rachel Ruiz, author of When Penny Met POTUS, visited the White House with her daughter, Macy, who inspired the book. On October 12, the two were guests for a reception in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Ruiz had previously worked for the video team at Obama for America, but had never had the chance to meet the president. Here, Ruiz and her daughter finally meet POTUS as well as vice president Joe Biden.

A Grand Opening

Little City Books in Hoboken, N.J., held a grand opening celebration for its Children’s Annex on November 5. The bookstore was decked out in red balloons and guests enjoyed treats as they perused the books. Kindergarten teacher Lindsay Shapoff from Stevens Cooperative School in Hoboken led a story time.

Say Grace

Symphony Space in Manhattan welcomed Grace Lin (When the Sea Turned to Silver) for a Thalia Kids’ Book Club event on November 6. Joining Lin was Kat Yeh (The Truth About Twinkie Pie), who spoke in conversation with Lin and actress Annie Q, who read a chapter from Lin’s new book. Lin also offered a live-drawing presentation, teaching audience members how to draw a dragon. Seen here backstage (from l.): Kat Yeh, Grace Lin, and Annie Q.

A 'Lodestar' Launch

Author Shannon Messenger celebrated the launch of the newest book in her Keeper of the Lost Cities series, Lodestar. The event, held at Barnes & Noble in Montclair, Calif., drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. Messenger will continue to tour throughout November and into December, with events in the Midwest, South, and on the West Coast.
