This week, J.K. Rowling attends a screening of Fantastic Beasts; Christian Robinson goes live on Facebook; friends and fellow authors R.J. Palacio and Meg Medina catch up; Mary Quattlebaum and Gilbert Ford celebrate new books; author Eleanor Glewwe gives her stamp of approval; and Per Breiehagen and Lori Evert welcome their latest ‘Wish.’

Guests of Honor

J.K. Rowling attended a screening of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at Carnegie Hall on November 12. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which Scholastic is publishing this month. Here, she is joined by actor Eddie Redmayne, who plays Newt Scamander in the film. Prior to the screening, Redmayne and Rowling took the stage to discuss Rowling’s children’s charity, Lumos.

Artist on Air

Illustrator Christian Robinson was selected by the New York Times to receive a 2016 Best Illustrated Award for his work on Margaret Wise Brown’s The Dead Bird. While in New York City this week to accept the prize, he took part in a Facebook Live with Maria Russo, children’s books editor at the New York Times, offering viewers a painting presentation.

A Match Made in Queens

The Bank Street College of Education in New York City welcomed authors and childhood friends R.J. Palacio (Wonder) (l.) and Meg Medina (Mango, Abuela and Me) on November 10. In a conversation moderated by Knopf’s Jennifer Brown, the pair discussed their upbringing in Queens, their friendship, their families, and their books.

All Together Now

Author Mary Quattlebaum (Together Forever: True Stories of Amazing Animal Friendships) and author-illustrator Gilbert Ford (The Marvelous Thing That Came from a Spring: The Accidental Invention of the Toy That Swept the Nation), spoke about their nonfiction books at an event hosted by Hooray for Books in Alexandria, Va. It was a reunion for the two authors: Ford was one of Quattlebaum’s students in the graduate program in writing for children at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

The Writerly Reading

Author Eleanor Glewwe celebrated the launch of her book Wildings on November 12 with a reading and signing event at Children’s Book World in Los Angeles. Glewwe, who is a graduate student studying linguistics at UCLA, signed copies of her fantasy book using a special stamp, which features a phonetic transcription of the word “writer.”
