This week, a young reader lives it up at Sanae Ishida’s book launch; authors visit American Girl Place; and author Jean L.S. Patrick celebrates her picture book and a little-known athlete.

Hats Off!

Author Sanae Ishida celebrated the release of the second book in her Little Kunoichi series, Chibi Samurai Wants a Pet (Sasquatch/Little Bigfoot), at Seattle’s Queen Anne Book Company on August 13. The event included a photo booth with props, a temporary tattoo station, origami hat decorating, a scavenger hunt, and Japanese snacks and drinks. Here, a guest shows off her origami hat—though her t-shirt kind of steals the scene.

What a Doll!

This year, Scholastic partnered with American Girl to publish books based on American Girl characters. Visitors to New York City’s American Girl Place had the chance to meet American Girl book authors (l.) Jen Calonita (American Girl: Z Yang, Book 1:The Real Z) and Teresa Harris (Gabriela and Gabriela Speaks Out). Here, girls line up with their new dolls and books.

Worth a Shot!

Jean L.S. Patrick (seated) came to Readers Den in Mitchell, S.D., on August 10 for the launch of her picture book, Long-Armed Ludy and the First Women’s Olympics (Charlesbridge). The book is based on the story of Lucile Godbold, an athlete who won a gold medal in the shotput. Here, Patrick reads from the book while demonstrating how to throw the shot.
