The Children’s Book Council and its charitable arm, Every Child a Reader, have announced the launch of an activity kit tied to author Jacqueline Woodson’s tenure as National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, for use in classrooms, libraries, bookstores, and elsewhere that children and teens engage with books. Inspired by Woodson’s official platform, “Reading = HOPE x CHANGE (What’s your equation?),” the materials were created with the aim of inspiring discussion and fostering a love of literature.

The National Ambassador Reading = HOPE x CHANGE Activity Kit is available for download on the Every Child a Reader website.

The kit features games, an “Equation Creator” and “Equation Designer,” Woodson’s list of recommended reading, event ideas, and more resources for teachers, librarians, and booksellers.

Shaina Birkhead, programming and strategic partnerships director at the CBC and Every Child a Reader, told PW, “This beautiful Reading = HOPE x CHANGE kit will be available for the entirety of Jacqueline’s ambassadorship, continuing the strong personal engagement with kids of all ages that is central to the National Ambassador program and all the ambassadors.” She added, “This will mark more than a decade of promoting the love of reading across the country and in every community, benefiting kids and teens, those who read with them and teach them, and the wide and wonderful publishing community and society as a whole.”
