This week, debut picture book authors Sean Hayes and Scott Icenogle visit Rachael Ray; a firefighter reads to kids; and William Joyce celebrates the final Guardians book.

A Plum Pair

Composer Scott Icenogle (l.) and actor-turned-author Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) are touring for their debut picture book, PLUM (Simon & Schuster), illustrated by Robin Thompson. The book tells the origin story of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. In addition to school visits and bookstore events, Hayes and Icenogle were guests on the Rachael Ray Show, where they answered questions about each other à la the “Newlywed Game.”

Under Construction

Chronicle Books teamed with the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program, which collects and distributes toys for children in need, for a series of storytime hours with firefighters. The events were held at four San Francisco Public Library branches and at Bookshop West Portal. Firefighters read from author Sherri Duskey Rinker and illustrator A.G. Ford’s Construction Site on Christmas Night, in which the trucks construct a firehouse. Here, firefighter Rich O’Toole reads at the West Portal Branch Library.

Just the Beginning

Author-illustrator William Joyce recently signed copies of the final book in his Guardians series, Jack Frost: The End Becomes the Beginning (Atheneum), at Barnes & Noble in Shreveport, La. Many of Joyce’s fans came as characters from the Guardians books, including this attendee, who is dressed as Katherine, the Guardian of Storytelling.
