Bone-jour, Children
Earlier this fall, Victoria Schwab embarked on a national tour for Tunnel of Bones (Scholastic Press), the sequel to her middle grade novel City of Ghosts. During school visits in Chapel Hill, N.C., co-hosted by Flyleaf Books, Schwab discussed the Catacombs of Paris. Tunnel of Bones brings Cassidy Blake, her paranormal investigator parents, and her ghost best friend Jacob to Paris. The eight-city tour began in Washington, D.C., and wrapped up in Menlo Park, Calif.
Deeply Rooted Culture
The National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., recently installed a Little Free Library crafted by Ojibwe birchbark and quillwork artist Pat Kruse. Donated by the Little Free Library organization’s Native Library Initiative, the book exchange box is intended to honor Native American culture and increase tribal communities’ access to culturally relevant books.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Late last month, Nikki Grimes attended the 2019 National Council of Teachers of English Convention in Baltimore. Here, Grimes (r.) joined Elizabeth Zunon, illustrator of Bedtime for Sweet Creatures (Sourcebooks Jabberwocky), for a signing. The picture book follows a mother lulling her resisting toddler to sleep via a parade of imagined creatures.
Wrap Stars
Two dozen volunteers from the Women’s National Book Association dropped by the Children’s Book Council offices for the third annual Holiday Book Drive and Gift Wrapping Party. This year, more than 100 books, labeled with age range and subject matter, were donated to children in Goddard Riverside programs.
