This week, Candlewick goes behind the scenes; Chris Barton takes a “light”-hearted trip to the Philippines; Sharon M. Draper makes a time-ly appearance, and Scholastic holds a conference for parents.

Let Me Take You to My Studio

This week, Candlewick presented a YouTube series called Candlewick Open Studios, giving viewers a midday peek into the studios and methods of three of its illustrators—Brianne Farley (No Buddy Like a Book) on Monday, Isabella Kung (ABC Cats: An Alpha-Cat Book and 1 2 3 Cats: A Cat Counting Book) on Wednesday, and, pictured here, Priscilla Tey (author-illustrator of Twitchy Witchy Itch), who will appear this Friday at 2 p.m. ET.

When the Lights Go Down in the City

Austin-based author Chris Barton had to be creative in the face of the Texas snowstorm and resultant blackouts for his scheduled February 17 virtual visit at the International School Manila. That evening, which was Thursday morning in the Philippines, Barton used a Coleman lantern to light his event, wherein he presented his latest book, Fire Truck vs. Dragon (illus. by Shanda McCloskey, Little, Brown).

About Time

In honor of Black History Month, bestselling author and Margaret A. Edwards Award winner Sharon M. Draper (Blended, Atheneum/Dlouhy) recently had a discussion with Nasdaq employees. On February 18, Draper was featured on the Nasdaq screen in Times Square.

Parents’ Night In

On February 10, Scholastic, in conjunction with more than 100 independent U.S. bookstores, took to their YouTube channel for Scholastic Parents Night: Keeping Kids Engaged as Readers!, an hour-long forum and q&a in which Scholastic authors, editors, and education experts addressed how to engage kids with books, build their skills, and grow their confidence.
