Joseph Vallely, a longtime independent literary agent best known for representing political and military nonfiction, died at his home in Front Royal, Va., on August 15. He was 74.

Vallely began his book publishing career in 1971 and went on to hold management positions in sales and marketing at NAL, Dell Publishers, and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. As an agent, his clients included Peter Schweizer, Bill Gertz, Stanley Newman, Scott A. Huessing, Martin Malia, Ron Christie, Marc Leepson, Joe Queenan, Paul Vandevelder, Thomas A. Bogar, and Richard Sale.

In addition to his career in publishing, Vallely was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was an officer in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Christine Nelson, whom he married in 2009.
