PEN American Center has created a new award, the PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, which will honor nonfiction books about sports. The award is the first partnership between PEN and ESPN.

One nonfiction book will win the award each year. A panel of three judges—all PEN members—will determine the winner, and will consider biographical, investigative, historical, and analytical books. Any book that fits that criteria and that was published in the U.S. previous to the award year is eligible. Publishers may submit 2009 titles before June 15, 2010; guidelines are available at www.pen.org/espn.

The 2010 PEN Literary Awards will be presented at The Graduate Center, CUNY, on October 13. Other awards given that night will include the PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers, the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction, the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry, and the PEN/Laura Pels Foundation Awards for Drama.
