Sales of books and magazines fell 6.3% at Books-A-Million, to $385 million, for the year ended January 29, the nation’s third largest bookstore chain reported in its 10-K filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission Friday. While sales of books and magazines fell, sales in the “other” products category that includes music, DVDs, e-books and other products rose 28.6%, to $40.5 million.

BAM said sales were down in its core book business in the year, and sales through its retail channel fell 3.3%, while online sales rose 9.9%, to $26.2 million. BAM started selling the Nook in its stores last fall, shortly after opening its own e-bookstore. The company said the sale of Nooks and accessories as well as e-books was the main reason for the increase in e-commerce sales.

BAM finished 2010 with 231 outlets,--201 superstores and 30 traditional stores. It opened 11 outlets in the year, closed three and relocated two. There was no mention of expansion plans for the current year.
