Given a huge boost by Easter, unit sales of print books jumped 23% in the week ended Easter Sunday, Mar. 27, 2016, over the similar (non-Easter) week in 2015 at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. Sales through the mass merchandisers channel soared 55% over the week ended Mar. 29, 2015; the gain in the week was enough to bring the channel to breakeven for the first 12 weeks of 2016 compared to the same period in 2015. Sales in the juvenile nonfiction category shot up 48%. Patricia Pingry’s Story of Easter was the top seller in the category in the week, selling 20,500 copies, followed by Animals by Jennifer Quasha, which sold more than 19,000 copies. Happy Easter, Mouse by Laura Joffe Numeroff was the #1 title in the juvenile fiction category, selling more than 28,000 copies. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School by Jeff Kinney and Pete the Cat: Big Easter Adventure by Kimberly Dean were in second and third places in the category, selling more than 23,000 and 20,000 copies, respectively. Total unit sales in the category were up 37% in the week. Unit sales in adult nonfiction increased 19%, as Harry Potter Coloring Book and Harry Potter Magical Creatures were in the first and third spots on the category bestsellers list, selling more than 18,000 and 16,000 copies, respectively. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying-Up by Marie Kondo was in second place, selling just under 20,000 copies. Unit sales in adult fiction rose 5%, led by the newest hardcover from Harlan Coben, Fool Me Once, which sold more than 30,000 copies in its first week.
