Unit sales of print books rose 6% in the week ended June 12, 2016, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. The increase included a rare event—unit sales of mass market paperbacks rose 2% over the week ended June 14, 2015, one of the few times this year that sales in the format topped weekly sales last year. Among the categories, the adult segments led the way. Unit sales in adult nonfiction were up 11%, while adult fiction unit sales rose 9%. There were no big debuts in adult nonfiction last week, as David Fisher’s Bill O’Reilly’s Legends and Lies: The Patriots stayed at #1 in the category, selling almost 30,000 copies. How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster saw a big increase in sales in the week, and the title finished in seventh place on the adult nonfiction bestsellers list, with more than 8,700 units sold. The 9% increase in unit sales in the adult fiction category was led by the release of Stephen King’s End of Watch, which sold almost 75,000 copies, making it the #1 title in the week. Sales in the segment also received a boost from the first titles in James Patterson’s new imprint, BookShots. Patterson’s own Cross Kill sold just under 18,000 copies in the week, putting it in sixth place on the adult fiction bestsellers list, while Zoo 2 by Patterson and Max DiLallo sold almost 12,000 copies, good enough for #13 on the list. Sales in both the juvenile fiction and nonfiction categories were basically flat in the week.
