Unit sales of print books inched up 1% in the week ended Jan. 15, 2017, over the same period in 2016, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. The adult fiction category had the biggest gain in the week, with unit sales up 4% over the week ended Jan. 17, 2016. Topping the adult fiction bestseller list was A Dog’s Purpose by Bruce Cameron, which sold 21,554 copies in the week, just edging out Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove, which sold 21,360 copies. Unit sales of adult nonfiction rose 1%. Three relatively new books headed the adult nonfiction bestseller list. At #1 was The Lose Your Belly Diet by Travis Stock, which sold almost 24,000 copies in the week. In second place was Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly, which sold just over 23,000 copies, followed in the third spot by Oprah Winfrey’s Food, Health, and Happiness, which sold more than 21,000 copies. Unit sales in juvenile fiction fell 4% in the week. The top seller was Jeff Kinney’s Double Down, the latest in his Wimpy Kid series, which sold more than 18,000 copies. Last year at this time, Kinney’s Old School was in second place on the juvenile fiction list, selling about 20,000 copies. At #1 was The Harry Potter Coloring Book, which sold more than 31,000 copies. The juvenile fiction category had a 1% dip in unit sales in the week compared to 2016. While the top two spots on the category bestseller list remained First 100 Words by Roger Priddy (about 7,900 copies sold) and The Pokémon Deluxe Essential Handbook (6,400 units sold), in third place was a new book, I Am Jim Henson by Brad Meltzer, which sold just under 4,000 copies in its first week.
