6/9 Toonseum Comics for Comics Benefit

Pittsburgh’s cartooning musem, the Toonseum, will host its annual Comics for Comics benefit concert on June 9. This year’s event features comedian and comics creator Dan Piraro and The Bizarro Cartoon Comedy Show, which includes slides, original music, and humorous stories from his life as a comics creator. The event takes place at The Rex Theatre located at 1602 East Carson Street, Pittsburgh, PA. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $20 for Toonseum members, and may be purchased ahead of time at Comics4Comics.com. All proceeds will benefit the museum.

6/10-6/11 Jim Woodring Signings in Portland & Seattle

Underground comics creator Jim Woodring will sign his new graphic novel Congress of the Animals in Portland at Powell’s City of Books and in Seattle at the Fantagraphics Bookstore. The Portland signing takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, at Powell’s Bookstore’s City of Books located at 1005 West Burnside, Portland, OR. The Seattle event will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at the Fantagraphics Bookstore, located at 1201 South Vale Street, Seattle, WA, in conjunction with the Georgetown Carnival. Both events are free to the general public.

6/11 Green Lantern Event with GL Comics Creators at Cartoon Art Museum

Timed to coordinate with the premiere of the upcoming Green Lantern movie, the Cartoon Art Museum will be launching “Green Lantern: The Exhibition” with a special Green Tie gala featuring Green Lantern comics creators as Judd Winick, Gerard Jones, Michael Friedrich and Steve Englehart as guests of honor. The Gala will include wine, hors d’oeuvres, a private viewing of the exhibit, and a chance to win preview passes to the upcoming movie. “Green Lantern: The Exhibition”, which opens to the general public on Saturday, June 11, includes original production artwork from 70 years of the popular DC comic. The event takes place at at the Cartoon Art Museum located at 655 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA. Tickets are $15 for two tickets for members, $30 for two for non-members. All proceeds will benefit the museum.

6/11 Astronaut Academy Launch Party & Kids Workshop in New York

Comics creator Dave Roman will premiere his new all-ages graphic novel Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity with a free comics workshop for kids and launch party at Bergen Street Comics. The children’s workshop takes place from 3 – 4 p.m., the children’s party takes place from 4- 6 p.m. and the adult launch party takes place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at Bergen Street Comics, 470 Bergen Street, Brooklyn, NY and is free to the general public.

6/17-6/19 Kids Read Comics Festival

Featuring such guests as John Ostrander, Raina Telgenmeier and Rob Worley, the third annual Kids Read Comics Festival will take place on June 17-19 in Chelsea, Michigan. The Kids Read Comics Festival is a celebration of comics aimed at both young readers and teens, complete with workshops, puppet shows, art demonstrations, portfolio reviews for young artists, superhero crafts, a costume parade and a moon bounce. Kids Read Comics Festival 2011 will be located at the Chelsea District Library, 221 South Main Street, Chelsea, MI. Hours are 6 - 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday and 12 – 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Kids Read Comics Festival has also sponsored The Super Fun Tour, a traveling series of events and workshops across Michigan, and a schedule of Super Fun Tour appearances can be found here.
