Leon Black, CEO of the private-equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC, has acquired Phaidon Press for an undisclosed price. With offices in New York and London, Phaidon is best known for its art books and does about 60 titles annually and has a 1,900-title backlist.

Black purchased Phaidon from Richard Schlagman, who has owned the publisher since 1990. Schlagman said Black possess the business acumen and appreciation or art and culture “to guarantee a great future for Phaidon.” In a statement, Black said he and his family, “look forward to supporting the future growth of the company, including through the ongoing development of its publishing program, further geographic expansion, and the launch of digital products.”
