In a deal that adds 27 titles to its backlist, Graphic Arts Books has acquired the trade books and publishing rights of Companion Press. Based in Bozeman, Mont., the independent press specializes in illustrated titles on iconic spots in the American West. Titles include Walk the Sky: Following the John Muir Trail and Alaska Light.

In addition to the backlist titles, Graphic Arts will release one new title, Sierra Wings, in September 2014. As books are reprinted they will fall under the Graphic Arts Books or WestWinds Press imprints. But Doug Pfeiffer, publishing director of Graphic Arts, said that to honor the Companion Press legacy, “The Companion Press Series” will be added to each title as it is reprinted or reissued as both print and e-books.

Companion Press was founded in 1987 by Jane Freeburg. “Graphic Arts Books is a great fit for Companion Press,” Freeburg said.
